Resident Becomes Naval Officer
On the 9th of May 2009, Christian David Cardon student became a
naval officer, with all the rights and privileges that accompany that rank. Cardon, son of Martha and Carlos Cardon began considering the
naval service during his down time in high school. He pontificated on the direction his life should take and found it watching a documentary on BUD/s. or Basic Underwater Demolition/SEAL training.
Attending the University of Utah as a midshipman, he took required courses in addition to his major course of study. After receiving the scholarship his sophomore year, he reported aboard and went underway with the USS Philadelphia (SSN 690) a nuclear powered
fast-attack submarine for his summer training. The following year, he worked with EOD (Explosive Ordinance Disposal) Unit 6, and received numerous qualifications.
As a result of his excellent grades in physics and calculus, he was asked to interview for Naval Nuclear Reactors. Due to a manning shift, he was offered a pilot slot. Rather than put off commissioning for eye surgery, he accepted a position as a flight officer. Flight officers (depicted in such movies as Top Gun by “Goose”) control and employ the weapon systems, electronic warfare, navigation and communication aboard the most sophisticated airframes in the US arsenal.
Ensign Cardon reports to NAS Pensacola in
August for flight training.
