Sandy Rotary Helps with Goodwill Mission

In May, the Sandy Rotary club assisted the Midvale-Ft.Union Rotary club, Sandy Sister City Committee and Eagle Scout to-be Hayden Stout and his family, on a goodwill relief mission to Piedras Negras last month.

The group delivered an ambulance, medical supplies, fire fighting equipment, car seats, bike helmets and much more to provide assistance to Sandy’s Sister City and its residents. In all, the value of the equipment and supplies provided totaled nearly $100,000. The Chamber of Commerce and other charitable organizations in Piedras Negras are continuing their efforts to expand and equip a much-utilized charitable hospital in Piedras Negras with the help of the equipment and supplies delivered by the group. However, there still remains much more to be done.

Sandy resident, Hayden Stout, with the help of his mother and father, gathered bike helmets and car seats here in Utah and with the help of the Rotarians, distributed them to families in need in Piedras Negras for his Eagle Scout Project.

Also on the relief mission were Ken Ivory, president of the Sandy Rotary club, Chris McCandless, Sandy City Councilman and member of the Midvale-Ft. Union Rotary club, his son, Sean McCandless, Steve Smith, chairman of the Sandy City council, Hayden Stout and his parents, Barry and Bonnie Stout.

Soccer Clinic for Sandy Club

On May 20, the Sandy Rotary Club, in conjunction with Real Salt Lake and Sandy City, held its first soccer clinic for The Sandy Club at Rio Tinto Stadium. One hundred boys and girls from the Sandy Club got the chance of a lifetime to be treated like professional soccer players on the grass in Rio Tinto stadium for an afternoon of soccer skills training and all around fun.

Teresa Nelson, of Real Salt Lake, arranged an incredible program for the kids. Nearly a dozen coaches were on hand from the local soccer community to teach the kids a variety of soccer skills. The children even got to play soccer games with two of the RSL players, Will Johnson and Jean Alexandre, which was one of the biggest highlights of the day for the kids. However, some of the children would argue that the RSL logo t-shirt and regulation RSL championship soccer ball that each child received gave them special bragging rights at home and at school.

In all, the Soccer Clinic was a huge success! The Sandy Rotary Club is pleased to work with RSL and Sandy City, and event sponsor, Ivory Law to make this special opportunity available to some of Sandy’s finest young folks.
